Following in the Poetic Footsteps of the Curonian Spit: A Literary Journey

The concept of a literary tour through the Curonian Spit was inspired by the anthology of poetry, I Wish To Return To Nida: Lithuanian Poets on the Curonian Spit (edited by Julius Keleras). This anthology was inspired by the Neringa Municipality Viktoras Miliūnas Public Library and is dedicated to the Curonian Spit as Cultural Capital. The literary critic, Marijus Šidlauskas,
wrote in his foreword to the anthology: “For many, the Curonian Spit is no more than a pleasant, romantic, touristic place to vacation, and not a site of cultural memory.” It is his belief that cultural memory is best preserved by poets. A poet possesses the ability to see signs of the future and to carry those visions into the mythic eternal space of a poem. We will invite the residents of the Curonian Spit and their guests into a reckoning with themselves and with the Curonian Spit. This experience will be enabled by the sounds of voices reading various poems about the Curonian Spit composed by a variety of poets from different time periods, in the most unexpected places. The literary walking tour will lead one to the home of M. L. Rėza in Karvaičiai, will enable one to return to the home of Nida’s chronicler, Viktoras Miliūnas, allow one to spend time in the spaces where the Lithuanian intelligentsia once gathered, and listen to poems while taking a trip on the old “Rocket” boat from Kaunas to Nida. One will listen to poems on the seacoast, beside the Curonian Lagoon, in the neighborhood of the old villas of Juodkrantė. At the end of this unique literary journey, participants will be invited to a literary
feast at the Nida harbor restaurant. This literary journey will begin in May and run throughout the year the Curonian Spit is the Cultural Capital.
